What Is Alkaline Water?
Alkaline water has been making the news recently and one would wonder what the fuss is all about. Is alkaline water better than the regular water everyone drinks? Alkaline water is known to have a higher pH level than the regular water, which is why it is called Alkaline. While the regular tap water has a pH of 7, which is considered normal, Alkaline has a pH level of 8 to 9. A pH of less than 7 would be acidic.
Due to its alkaline nature, some people believe it could help neutralize the acid content in the body. The most common causes of the change of pH level in the body often stem from illnesses and while an illness like diabetes would make the blood more acidic, kidney problems would make it alkaline. There are companies that package and sell Alkaline water for consumption but a lot of people are curious about the source. There are different kinds of Alkaline water. You can get the natural alkaline water from places where the water picks up minerals, like in Springs where water passes through a rock. You can also make your own alkaline water by mixing lemon juice and/or baking soda to make it more alkaline.
Most manufacturing companies, however, make theirs through a process known as electrolysis. Water Ionizers are used to raise the pH of regular water, which makes it more alkaline. Electricity is then applied to separate the molecules in the water, thereby getting alkaline water apart from the acidic water.

Does It Work?
Whether or not alkaline water is good for the body is constantly being debated. A study in 2012 showed how drinking alkaline water could help deactivate pepsin, which is the enzyme responsible for acid reflex. A recent study also showed how participants had a significant difference in whole-body viscosity after drinking alkaline water immediately following a strenuous workout. The water helped improve circulation which enhanced oxygen delivery throughout the body.
These studies and more have raised several convictions on why people should take more alkaline water. Apart from reducing the acid level in the body, it has also shown to help improve metabolism, aid digestion, increase energy and slow ageing.

Although there isn’t much solid research to support the claims of how much Alkaline water benefits the body, its influence so far cannot be entirely dismissed. However, it is important to note that too much alkalinity could produce symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, hand tremors, confusion, and tingling. So, while you take Alkaline water, be careful to keep it moderate.
